As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, South County Habitat for Humanity is eligible to receive charitable gifts through donor-advised funds (DAF). To make a gift through your DAF, first contact your financial/legal advisor or your DAF representative to recommend a grant to South County Habitat for Humanity. If possible, please include your contact information with your gift so that we can thank you for your generosity. Your DAF administrator may require the following information:
Limitations to donating through a donor-advised fund:
Donors cannot use their DAF to pay off an already existing debt or obligation.
Money in DAFs have already received tax deductions, therefore a gift from a DAF does not qualify for goods and services, such as event tickets or thank-you gifts.
The IRA Charitable Rollover was first enacted as part of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 and permanently extended in the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015. Now, you can make a charitable gift directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) every year while excluding the amount of that gift from your adjusted gross income (AGI). (This tax savings is especially valuable to donors who are non-itemizers and donors who have reached their limit on itemized charitable deductions.)
Advantages to you:
You can use an often-overlooked asset to make a gift to South County Habitat for Humanity, The IRA Charitable Rollover permits you to make donations directly to charitable organizations such as SCHH from your IRA without counting the distribution as part of your adjusted gross income and, consequently, without paying taxes on it.
You can receive a tax benefit regardless of whether you itemize deductions or take the standard deduction on your income tax return.
The distribution can count toward your required minimum distribution for the year.
To qualify:
You must be 73 or older.
Distributions can only be made from traditional Individual Retirement Accounts or Roth IRAs. Charitable donations from 403(b) plans, 401(k) plans, pension plans, and other retirement plans are ineligible for the tax-free treatment. Distribution must be made directly from the IRA trustee payable to South County Habitat for Humanity or another qualified public charity.
Your total combined charitable IRA rollover contributions are limited to $100,000 per year. (Married couples may be able to contribute up to $200,000.)
Qualified Charitable Distributions from an IRA must go directly to a public charity that is not a supporting organization. Contributions to donor-advised funds and private foundations generally do not qualify for this special treatment.
You cannot receive any goods or services in exchange for your Qualified Charitable Distribution (including thank-you gifts).
You must receive an acknowledgement from South County Habitat for Humanity or another charity for each Qualified Charitable Distribution.

A bequest is one of the most popular and simplest ways to make a future gift. With the help of an attorney or advisor, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift to be made to South County Habitat for Humanity as part of your estate plan. Generally a percentage bequest is the best way to keep up with inflation.
Designate South County Habitat for Humanity as a beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy. You can also give your paid-up policy to the organization. By transferring ownership of a policy to Habitat, you can leave a gift that will not be delayed by estate probate. This may translate into a large gift (and tax deduction) with little cost to you and your heirs.
Giving a home or land supports our core mission and may provide excellent tax benefits. A home means community, commitment and a brighter future. Property may be given by signing a deed transferring ownership to Habitat, placing in a trust, or left in your will.
Name SCHH as a beneficiary on your IRA or qualified retirement plan to receive a percentage of what remains when the plan ends. Giving through your retirement account is one of the most tax-wise ways to give.
